Common Oral Problems That Can Be Fixed with Cosmetic Dentistry

December 3, 2020

Cosmetic dentistry has procedures that can address a long list of common oral problems. Some people may think that cosmetic dentistry is only about getting a whiter smile but that is not the case. Cosmetic dentistry procedures do impact the way that your teeth look but they can also help address other issues as well. Common oral problems that can be fixed with cosmetic dentistry include chipped teeth, discolored teeth, cracked teeth, misaligned teeth, and dark fillings. If you are dealing with one or more of these issues then you should consider cosmetic dentistry.

Chipped tooth

Chipping a tooth is common. A chipped tooth can happen from a fall, some type of injury, or something as simple as biting down on a hard piece of food. Oftentimes, chipping a tooth is a purely cosmetic issue because it does not impact the root of your tooth. However, if the chip leaves you with a sharp point it could put your tongue and mouth in danger of injury. Cosmetic dentistry offers a few different solutions for repairing chipped teeth. Options for repair include porcelain crowns, porcelain veneers, and esthetic bonding.

Discolored teeth

Teeth can become discolored because of surface stains, physical injury, medication, or smoking. The cause of the discoloration will determine which cosmetic procedure is the right option for you. In-office teeth whitening can remove up to ten layers of surface stains in as little as one hour. If your tooth discoloration goes below the surface, you will have to look into options such as porcelain veneers or crowns to cover up the discoloration.

Cracked tooth

Cosmetic dentistry can help hide the signs of a cracked tooth. The first thing to do if you crack a tooth is to schedule an appointment with your dentist for imaging. Some cracks are surface level but others can go all the way to the root. If the crack impacts the root it can lead to more serious issues such as infection, pain, and potentially tooth loss. After you make sure your tooth is still healthy, the crack can be addressed with porcelain veneers or crowns.

Misaligned teeth

Misaligned teeth can cause issues beyond making you unhappy about how they look. For example, a deep bite can cause some of your teeth to be worn down quickly. This issue can eventually cause pain and have a negative impact on how your teeth look. Invisible braces are an option for many people who want to fix bite issues and misaligned teeth.

Dark fillings

Improvements in dental technologies have led to the creating of materials that can be used to repair decay without dark amalgam fillings. If you have dark fillings from your past and hate the way they look, there is a cosmetic dentistry option that can help. You can have your old fillings replaced with tooth-colored composite fillings.

Cosmetic dentistry can provide you with options to restore your smile. If you are in the process of trying to find a dentist, be sure and choose one who offers a wide range of cosmetic dentistry options. Most people encounter issues at some point that require the help of cosmetic dentistry.
