ROUTINE ORAL PROBLEMS THAT CAN TURN INTO SERIOUS ISSUES

ROUTINE ORAL PROBLEMS THAT CAN TURN INTO SERIOUS ISSUES | Dental Remedies
February 23, 2021

Life can often seem like a never-ending balancing act of responsibilities and commitments…when you’re preoccupied with so many things, it’s easy to let attention to health and wellness fall by the wayside – especially when it comes to oral health. However, the truth is that even routine oral health problems have the potential to turn serious faster than you might think.

Cavities

Cavities can often seem commonplace, a routine issue that is normal given the sugar and carb-heavy diets of most adults. However, if left untreated, a cavity (tooth decay) can deteriorate quickly and create acidic toxins from plaque buildup that break down the enamel of the tooth. Without the protective layer of enamel, you’re more prone to experience pain and have a higher risk of cracking or chipping a tooth. Furthermore, a cavity can turn into a tooth abscess, greatly increasing the risk of sepsis or infections in other systems of the body.

Dry Mouth

Dry mouth is much more than just an uncomfortable inconvenience to quietly suffer through…Many medications used to treat other health conditions can cause dry mouth, which can lead to significant problems when it comes to your oral health. Saliva plays an important role in the mouth, as it contains fluoride and electrolytes that help protect the teeth. Saliva not only moistens the mouth, but it washes away bits of food that may be left behind after eating. Dry mouth can cause more food particles to be stuck to teeth, increasing the risk of plaque buildup that can lead to tooth decay.

Receding Gums

As we age, normal changes in our body coupled with detrimental brushing habits (like brushing too hard for long periods of time) can lead to a receding gumline. Receding gums expose parts of the teeth that were previously protected, leaving gaps in between that may be difficult to reach with floss and normal brushing. This can leave you vulnerable to plaque buildup, a higher risk of tooth decay, and general discomfort due to increased sensitivity.

Gingivitis

Swollen gums that tend to bleed easily may not seem like a big deal…but gingivitis is the first stop on the way to gum disease, which can have detrimental effects on your oral and overall health. When plaque builds up on teeth, it can irritate the gums and lead to gingivitis. Tooth decay can easily follow, with the potential for tooth loss if the problem is left untreated for too long. If gum disease continues to spread, lower levels of tissue may become infected. Infection can quickly spread to other parts of the body, potentially developing serious health issues and complications to existing conditions.

Regular visits to the dentist will keep your teeth looking their best and oral health in its rightful place on your list of priorities.
