Getting dentures may seem like a good way to end your dental struggles. For many, it is the best option but for others, there are preventive and corrective steps that will allow them to keep their natural teeth. It is sometimes difficult to know if you need dentures or if dentures are the best option for your overall dental health. There are some signs that you will see if you are heading for needing dentures.

Signs You Might Need Dentures

There are a number of signs that indicate it may be time for dentures. This is not a comprehensive list and every situation is different. Whether or not you need dentures is a decision that you and your dentist can decide together after considering all of the options.

Eating Certain Foods is a Struggle

When it becomes difficult to chew certain foods it may indicate that it is time for dentures. While many of the issues that cause problems chewing can be corrected with minor procedures, more significant problems may need correction with dentures. This can be determined by a visit to your local dentist.

You Have Missing Teeth

Missing or damaged teeth are two issues that can potentially lead to dentures in the future. In some situations, missing teeth can be addressed with other options such as a bridge or dental implants. But as the number of missing teeth starts to increase the conversation may have to shift to dentures. Continuing to live with missing or damaged teeth is not an option because missing can cause problems with chewing and speaking as well as causing pain and discomfort.

Making an appointment with your dentist to assess the situation of your missing teeth is the first step to pain-free teeth.

You Don’t Visit the Dentist Regularly

Regular dental visits and preventative care is the best way to keep dental problems at bay. However, if you don’t see your dentist every six months as is recommended then you are likely to need treatments for damaged teeth such as dentures. There are people that can go years without seeing a dentist and still have healthy teeth however that is not a common occurrence. It is more common to see severe gum disease which can lead to tooth loss and eventually the need for dentures.

You Have Chronic Toothaches

Chronic toothaches are a major sign that your teeth are heading for extraction and dentures. Once you start experiencing toothaches it is wise to see a dentist. Don’t let them get worse by ignoring the symptoms. The pain may start out small but it will get worse. However, there are situations that don’t get better even with treatment. Chronic problems will often end with dentures.
