WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE SKIPPED OUT ON ROUTINE DENTAL CARE FOR YEARS

WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE SKIPPED OUT ON ROUTINE DENTAL CARE FOR YEARS | Dental Remedies
September 6, 2021

It’s so easy to do. Something comes up, and you miss your regular dental checkup. You reschedule, get the reminder call, but then…if it’s not one thing, it’s another – and you miss that appointment too. And before you know it, you’ve skipped out on routine dental care for years and are having a hard time getting back to normal. Here are some tips on how to get back in the saddle:

  1. Make the Appointment

Even if their next available is weeks (or more!) out, pick up the phone, schedule online, hitch a ride to the office and do it in person…whatever you have to do, make sure you get an appointment on the books. Knowing you have an appointment coming up will help you develop expectations and appropriately plan for the coming visit.

  1. Make Dental Care a Priority

You are important and worth caring for. Making dental care a priority is a great way to show yourself and your body love – even if something comes up, you already have an appointment that you are committed to keeping. Don’t let an unexpected event or someone else’s immediate need distract you from your priority… dental care is extremely important for your health and wellbeing, so you’ll be better prepared to help and serve others if you have already cared for your own body first.

  1. Start Practicing Good Oral Hygiene Habits at Home

It’s not “too little, too late” when it comes to good oral hygiene. Sure, some people might have more work to do to turn around years of neglecting oral health – but no matter what, it’s never too late to start practicing good oral hygiene. Once you have an appointment on the books and have your priorities straight, it’s time to take action. Be sure you’re brushing at least twice a day and floss, floss, floss! Use caution with acidic foods and drinks that could further wear away the protective layer of enamel on your teeth. Drink more water to flush away the sugar that clings on to teeth after those sweet snacks you sneak here and there…just go back to the basics and start caring for your teeth as best you can in preparation for your appointment.

  1. Do Your Homework

Paperwork can a hassle, but it’s important to have everything in order when you go back to the dentist for the first time in years. If you’re seeing a new dentist, make sure you have your records transferred to the new office and get the new patient paperwork ahead of time so you can fill it out before your appointment. Whether you’re a new patient or a long-lost one that’s returning, make sure you have your current insurance information on file and up to date. Having everything in order prior to your appointment will make sure you have a seamless transition back into the routine of regular dental checkups!

If you have skipped out on routine dental care for years, it’s not too late. Now is the time to take action and start prioritizing your oral and overall health. If you’re ready to take the plunge back into regular dental care, Dental Remedies in St. Augustin is a great place to start – their caring, qualified staff will ensure you have a great experience and will welcome you back to the world of dentistry with open arms!
