There is a lot of information out there about improving your overall health. Things like taking caring of your heart health and controlling your weight get a lot of attention. Another factor that impacts your overall physical health – but does not get a lot of attention – is your oral health. The condition of your gums and teeth can have a direct impact on your overall health. In addition, your oral health can impact how you look at how you feel. Because of this, it is important to put the same thought into caring for your oral health as you put into caring for your overall health. If your oral health needs to be improved, there are some simple steps you can follow to improve it.

Brush consistently

No one is surprised to learn that a dentist recommends brushing your teeth regularly. However, this task is neglected often enough that it is worth mentioning. The minimum recommendation for brushing your teeth is to do it twice per day. Typically, people brush after waking up in the morning and before going to bed in the evenings. This routine is a good one to follow. Problems can arise if you get too laid back about this routine. You may feel extra tired one evening and decide to go to bed without brushing your teeth. This allows bacteria to remain on your teeth and gums throughout the night. Missing out on brushing once won’t immediately send you to the dentist with cavities. However, it is easy to allow skipping out on brushing to become a habit. When that happens, you will find yourself having some serious problems with your oral health. If you have not been brushing consistently, recommit to the process and you will see an improvement in your oral health. 

Floss regularly

Have you ever had a routine cleaning and felt pain when the hygienist was flossing your teeth or working around your gums? If so, this is a sign that you are probably not flossing regularly. Flossing helps keep your gums healthy by getting rid of food particles and harmful bacteria. If you do not floss regularly, your gums can become inflamed and sensitive. That is why your gums bleed and hurt during routine dental appointments. Skipping out on flossing can also lead to gum disease. The early stage of gum disease comes with some mild symptoms, but advanced gum disease can have serious consequences. Those consequences can include receding gums, tooth loss, and infection that impacts other areas of your health. Flossing regularly can be a difficult habit to develop but it can have a huge impact on your overall oral health. 

Go to routine dental appointments

Going to your routine dental appointments can significantly impact your oral health. The deep cleaning that occurs during a routine appointment removes tartar and plaque to help prevent decay. Your dentist will also take imaging of your teeth and look at the condition of your gums during some of those routine appointments. There are a number of oral health problems that can be prevented or addressed quickly if you get to the dentist regularly.
