Tooth Replacement Options to Consider

Tooth Replacement Options to Consider | Dental Remedies
March 18, 2021

There are a number of tooth replacement options worth considering if you are missing one or more teeth. Each option has something to offer but there is not one option that is right for every single situation. Because of this, you will need to take some time to explore and find the one that is right for you. Your dentist will be an important part of this process as well. Three tooth replacement options to consider include dental implants, bridges, and dentures.

Dental implants

Dental implants are a permanent tooth replacement option. A titanium post is placed into the jawbone to create a stable base for the replacement tooth. Over time, the bone and post fuse together. An artificial replacement tooth sits on top of the gumline and is attached to the post. Once the implant is placed, you can treat it like your natural teeth. There is no special care required like there is for the other tooth replacement options that will be outlined below. Dental implants are an option for people who have a healthy jawbone. With missing teeth, the jawbone can deteriorate over time. If the bone deteriorates beyond a certain point it can take the option of dental implants off the table. You will work closely with your dentist to determine if dental implants are the right option for you.

Dental bridges

Dental bridges can be fixed or removable.  This type that is best for you depends on your needs and the condition of your surrounding teeth. A bridge is a replacement tooth that sits on top of your gumline. The bridge uses one or more surrounding teeth as anchors to keep it in place. Bridges may require adjustment or special care from time to time. If you do not qualify for dental implants, a dental bridge may be the next best option. In order to get a bridge, it is necessary for you to have healthy surrounding teeth as anchors. If you do not have teeth that can act as anchors, then you will have to consider getting dentures.

Dentures

Dentures are a tooth replacement option for people who have lost all or most of their teeth. There are both full and partial dentures. Dentures are removable and require some special care. If dentures are the right option for you, it is essential that you get a set that fits properly. There are several issues that can arise from having ill-fitting dentures. As with the other tooth replacement options, you will work closely with your dentist throughout the process of getting dentures.

There is no need to live with missing teeth because there is a tooth replacement option for every situation. Set up a time to meet with your dentist and discuss tooth replacement options. The sooner you start the process of finding a tooth replacement option the sooner you will be able to get back to normal.
